ABS pipe fittings are a popular form of pipe fittings used around the world. You will most likely find some form of ABS pipe fitting in your home. In today’s guide we shall look in more detail at ABS pipe fittings including what they can be used for as well as their advantages and disadvantages.

What They’re Used For
ABS stands for Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene – and is a form of plastic piping. The main usages for ABS pipe fittings include drain, waste, vent and sewage purposes. This is largely because it is very useful for underground applications as it can withstand large loads on top of it without cracking, bending or collapsing. Around the house you will often find ABS pipe fittings used for draining your toilet, sink, shower and washing machine. ABS pipe fittings have very similar uses to PVC pipe fittings, which are the most common form of material for waste usages in the USA and Canada – with ABS running closely behind.

Types and Sizes
ABS pipe fittings come in a range of types and sizes to suit a variety of purposes. Some of the different types of ABS pipe fittings include: couplings, female adaptors, elbows, double wye, combination tee-wye, vent elbows, long sweep elbows and more. There are obviously also ABS pipes available in a variety of lengths that are used to connect with the adaptors above. Sizes vary and ABS pipe fittings are available in very large sizes that are used for commercial waste projects.

Advantages and Disadvantages of ABS Pipe Fittings
There are a huge range of advantages to using ABS pipe fittings. It is incredibly durable, and as we mentioned before it can withstand huge weights on top of it. It can also withstand dramatic temperature changes and performs excellently in temperatures ranging from -40 degrees F up to 180 degrees F. This is because ABS absorbs heat very slowly which minimizes the chance of it being affected by the heat – making it ideal for use with dishwashers and washing machines that discharge hot water. ABS pipe fittings will not corrode or rust, and thanks to its smooth interior it allows for very good, consistent flow with minimal blockage. Compared to other materials, ABS pipe fittings are much cheaper to buy and are very easy to install. They are installed using a solvent cementing process. Despite being so durable it is very easy to cut into your desired length and shape with round-the-house tools. The main disadvantage to using ABS pipe fittings are that it is not very durable when it comes to solvents or fatigue resistance. It also has minimal UV resistance, so should not be left exposed to the sun. ABS pipe fittings are not suitable for all purposes, and before installing them it must be ensured that they will not be used for disposing of any materials that can corrode or destroy the ABS piping. Organic material similarly does not work well with ABS piping. Failure of ABS pipe from contact with sulphuric acid. ABS is not suitable for containing or conveying sulphuric acid.
