DBRfittings' PVC Closet Bend, often simply called a closet flange or toilet flange, is a specialized pipe fitting designed for one critical purpose: to connect a toilet drain to the building's waste-vent stack.

It is the crucial link between the porcelain toilet and the PVC drainage system in your home or building. While the term "bend" is in its name, it's more accurately a flanged elbow that provides a secure, leak-proof connection.

Key Features and Design

90-Degree Bend: The primary body of the fitting is a long-radius 90-degree elbow. This gentle sweep is essential for preventing clogs by ensuring waste moves smoothly from the horizontal toilet outlet into the vertical drainpipe.

Flanged End: This is the defining characteristic. The fitting ends in a flat, circular flange with pre-drilled holes. This flange is designed to be securely anchored to the finished bathroom floor.

Hub or Spigot End: The other end is a standard PVC socket (hub) designed to be glued onto a piece of PVC pipe, or sometimes a spigot end that fits inside a hub.

Material: Typically made from solid white PVC, but you can also find:

ABS (Black Plastic): Common in some regions.

Cast Iron with a PVC Hub: Used for connecting a new PVC toilet to an existing cast-iron drain line.

Stainless Steel Ring: Many modern PVC flanges have a stainless steel ring to prevent the screw holes from stripping out over time.

Primary Function and Purpose

The closet bend serves three critical functions:

Secure the Toilet: The flange is bolted to the floor, and the toilet itself is then bolted to the flange. This prevents the toilet from rocking, shifting, or tipping, ensuring it is stable and secure.

Create a Seal: A wax ring (or a newer rubber alternative) is compressed between the base of the toilet horn and the opening of the closet bend. This creates a watertight and gas-tight seal, preventing sewer gases from leaking into the bathroom and wastewater from seeping onto the floor.

Direct Waste: It provides the proper 90-degree transition from the horizontal flow out of the toilet to the vertical drain line, facilitating a smooth and efficient flow.

Common Types and Variations

Standard PVC Closet Bend: The most common type for new PVC plumbing installations.

Spigot x Flange: Has a spigot (male) end that inserts into another fitting's hub, useful in tight spaces.

Offset Closet Flange: Used when the existing drainpipe is not perfectly aligned with the toilet's location. It allows for a small adjustment (usually 1-2 inches) in any direction.

Repair or Push-Tite Flange: Designed for repairs where accessing the pipe from below is impossible. It fits inside the existing pipe and is secured with a special gasket or bolts.

Installation Overview (Simplified)

Positioning: The closet bend is dry-fitted to ensure it sits flush with or slightly above the level of the finished floor.

Gluing: The pipe end is permanently glued (solvent-welded) to the drainpipe.

Securing: The flange is screwed firmly into the subfloor (usually concrete or wood) using the provided holes.

Sealing: A wax ring is placed over the flange's opening.

Toilet Mounting: The toilet is lowered onto the flange, compressing the wax ring, and the toilet bolts (closet bolts) are tightened to secure it.
