Key Features and Characteristics
Material: Made from ABS, a durable, black plastic that is:
Corrosion-Resistant: Unlike metal, it won't rust or corrode from exposure to water and household chemicals.
Lightweight & Easy to Install.
Cost-Effective.
Design:
Threaded: The plug has male (external) threads that screw into a matching female (internal) threaded fitting called a cleanout fitting.
Square Head: The top of the plug features a square-shaped nub designed to be gripped by a wrench for installation and removal.
Gasket or Seal: Most modern plugs have a built-in rubber O-ring or a beveled design that creates a water-tight seal without the need for sealants, though pipe dope or Teflon tape is sometimes used.
Standard Sizes: The most common size for residential use is 3-inch and 4-inch diameter, matching the standard pipe sizes for main drain lines. Smaller sizes (1.5", 2") are also available for branch lines.
Where Are They Used?
Cleanout plugs are found at strategic locations in a plumbing system to allow access to different sections of pipe. Common locations include:
Main Building Drain: Where the main drain line exits the house, often in a basement or crawlspace.
At the Base of Soil Stacks: The large vertical pipe that carries waste from toilets.
At Every 90-Degree Change of Direction: Long horizontal drain lines may have a cleanout after a significant turn.
Outside the Home: In the yard, often marked by a round, black plastic cap at ground level, providing access to the main sewer line.
Under Sinks: Especially in commercial buildings or complex installations.
Types of Cleanout Plugs and Fittings
Cleanout Fitting: A specialized ABS fitting with a threaded opening designed to accept the plug.
Test Plug: Used during plumbing inspections to temporarily seal the end of a pipe. They are often mechanical and tightened with a bolt.
Push-Plug / Snap-Plug: A newer style that doesn't use threads. It simply pushes into the cleanout fitting and "snaps" into place with a rubber gasket creating the seal. It's removed by prying it out with a screwdriver.
Importance and Function
Clog Removal: The primary function. When a drain is severely clogged, removing the plug allows a drain auger (or "snake") to be fed directly into the pipe to break up the blockage.
Camera Inspection: Plumbers can insert a specialized inspection camera through the cleanout to visually diagnose problems like cracks, root intrusion, or buildup.
System Testing: During new construction or repairs, cleanouts are used to perform a "water test" to ensure the system is watertight and properly installed.
Installation, Maintenance, and Common Issues
Installation: The cleanout fitting is glued (using ABS cement) into the pipe system during initial plumbing installation. The plug is then hand-tightened and given a final quarter-turn with a wrench. Overtightening can crack the fitting or strip the threads.
Maintenance: It's a good practice to occasionally remove the plug (if easily accessible) and check for minor clogs before they become major.
Common Problems:
Stuck Plug: Over time, plugs can become seized due to dirt, debris, or chemical bonding. Applying heat carefully with a hairdryer can help expand the plastic and loosen it. Avoid open flames.
Stripped Square Head: If the square head is rounded off by using the wrong tool, it becomes very difficult to remove. Special extraction tools are available for this situation.
Leaks: If the plug is not tight enough or its gasket is worn, it can leak. Tightening or replacing the plug (or its O-ring) usually solves the problem.
