Key Features and Characteristics

90-Degree Turn: The defining feature is its ability to make a perfect right-angle turn.

Material: Made from PVC, which is lightweight, non-conductive, and resistant to corrosion, chemicals, and rust.

Sizes: Available in a vast range of sizes, from small 1/2-inch diameters for residential plumbing to large 12-inch+ diameters for industrial and municipal uses.

Pressure Ratings: Like PVC pipe, elbows are rated for different pressure levels (e.g., Schedule 40, Schedule 80). Schedule 80 has thicker walls and is used for higher-pressure applications.

Connection Method: Most are designed for solvent welding, where a primer and cement are used to chemically fuse the pipe and fitting together, creating a permanent, leak-proof seal. Threaded versions are also available.

Common Types of 90-Degree Elbows

There are several variations to suit different installation needs:

Standard 90-Degree Elbow

The most basic type, with two female (hub) ends for solvent welding a pipe into each end.

Street Elbow (or Street 90)

This is an extremely useful fitting. It has one female (hub) end and one male (spigot) end.

The male end can be inserted directly into another female fitting, eliminating the need for a short piece of pipe (nipple). This makes it ideal for tight spaces and can simplify assembly.

Reducing 90-Degree Elbow

This elbow not only changes direction but also changes the pipe size. The two ends are of different diameters (e.g., 1" x 3/4").

Useful for transitioning from a main line to a smaller branch line around a corner.

Threaded 90-Degree Elbow

Can have female threads (FPT) or male threads (MPT) on one or both ends.

Used when a non-permanent, demountable connection is needed or for connecting to threaded metal pipes or equipment.

Plumbing: In residential and commercial buildings for drain, waste, and vent (DWV) systems, as well as cold and hot water supply lines.

Industrial Fluid Transport: For moving non-corrosive chemicals, process water, and other fluids.

Electrical Conduit: To protect electrical wires when they need to make a 90-degree turn inside a wall or conduit run.
